ECB runoff: how gold revaluation can obscure tightening

Premise: rising yields have not stopped tightening
Richter starts from a coexistence: euro-area sovereign yields have risen while the ECB continues reducing bonds and loans accumulated through QE. He reports a €95 billion quarterly reduction and a 53% decline from the mid-2022 peak. These are his descriptions of the reporting period, rather than an independently verified ARGUS official series. His argument assumes policymakers remain willing to tolerate the financing costs of normalization instead of restoring broad bond purchases whenever yields rise.
First link: portfolio runoff returns pricing to investors
The author interprets runoff as a withdrawal of continuing support for bond prices: maturing securities leave the central bank portfolio and government financing depends more on prices private investors accept. ARGUS interprets this as a possible increase in duration and credit risk that private balance sheets must absorb, given financing needs, which can raise required returns. This does not identify QT as the sole cause of higher yields. Inflation expectations, issuance and risk appetite also affect pricing, and loan repayments need not transmit like bond maturities.
Second link: policy rates reinforce the quantity channel
Richter also reports two renewed 25-basis-point increases taking the deposit rate to 2.50%, and reads the rate and balance-sheet decisions as jointly restrictive. ARGUS separates the channels: the policy rate affects the opportunity cost of short-term funds, while portfolio reduction changes market absorption and risk allocation. Their coexistence means rising long yields alone do not establish a pivot toward easing. Realized financing conditions still depend on bank transmission, credit demand and risk premia; a policy direction is not a complete description of every borrower’s financing outcome.
Third link: gold valuation obscures portfolio contraction
The article explains that quarterly marking of gold to market changes reported assets without implying gold transactions or newly created money. Richter reports a €53 billion valuation increase, alongside a €35 billion fall in total assets; excluding that gold revaluation, assets fell €88 billion. ARGUS therefore distinguishes the €95 billion contraction in QE bonds and loans from the €88 billion total-asset change excluding gold revaluation. They measure different baskets. A rising gold price can make the headline balance sheet look less restrictive without establishing additional policy support to the financial system.
Conclusion: separate policy flows from valuation
Richter concludes that higher yields and rising book values for gold have not stopped the ECB tightening he describes. ARGUS draws a narrower conditional lesson: assess liquidity using policy rates, changes in bond and loan holdings, and gold valuation separately, rather than treating total assets as a single easing gauge. Renewed net purchases, slower runoff or new lending that offsets contraction would require revisiting the persistence claim. Even with continued runoff, improving credit and financing conditions would support a claim about quantity reduction alone, rather than uniformly tighter overall financial conditions.
ARGUS interpretation: runoff can influence bond pricing through private risk absorption; rate decisions affect short-term opportunity costs; marking gold to market primarily changes accounting measurement. These channels require separate treatment. The article describes contemporaneous policy and reporting developments; coexistence does not identify their causal contributions to yields, nor does each euro of asset reduction necessarily translate into a euro of lost bank credit.
This analysis is conditional on the author’s account published on October 8, 2026; ECB official data were not independently cross-checked. Currency notation is inconsistent in some loan-balance and prior-quarter gold references, which are not used for further calculations here. If valuation changes are mixed with transactions, other assets or facilities offset runoff, or policy changes direction, the balance sheet must be decomposed again rather than extrapolating this quarter.
Follow-up should compare like-for-like ECB bond and loan balances, gold revaluation items and rate decisions, then examine bank lending conditions and major member-state sovereign yields and spreads. Continued QE-asset reduction without offsetting facilities supports persistence of quantity contraction; net purchases or offsetting new loans weaken that conclusion. A gold-driven rise in total assets alone proves neither easing nor the disappearance of financing pressure. These are proposed verification conditions, not additional evidence collected in this review.
